As a family photographer, I realize how difficult and stressful it can be to plan for a family session. For most, planning what everyone will wear only adds to the drama that surrounds scheduling an event like this. I know, I know, you've got 3 kids, all under the age of 8, a grumpy and uncooperative husband that despises anyone who points a camera at him, and don't much care to have yourself in these photos either. Trust me, I see you over there, momma. You are absolutely doing the right thing though, if you didn't put yourself through this hell at least once every couple of years, where would you be in 18 years as you're an empty nester with none of these precious images to reminisce on?
I am here to make your day a little better with some tips to get your family photo-ready without tears!
Tips:
1. Do not match, only coordinate.
Unless you are doing a "mommy and me" session, matching is never a good idea.
Instead, aim to coordinate outfits through the use of colors that are complimentary.
2. Use the season as inspiration for a common color palette.
3. Neutrals are always a good idea.
4. Refrain from putting two colors on one person. It is best to pair each person's color
with a neutral. For example, pair a red sweater with khaki, gray, or a dark denim pant.
5. In the fall and winter months, layer your outfits and wear items with texture.
6. In the spring and summer, wear dresses with movement and flow.
7. Don't forget the accessories! Bring along all of the accessories that you are comfortable in and let your photographer decide what is best for your session. Scarves, hats, cardigans, and dusters add movement, texture, drama, and a sense of coziness to a family session!
